My instruction sheet for the WOUXUN KG-UV2D 2M / 220 Mhz (or 440 Mhz) HANDY TALKIE ( HT ) *
The following is what I’ve learned, and the way I programmed my Wouxun KG-UV2D without the aid of the programming cable and software.

I hope this may help you to program and understand the radio. * No guarantees, these instructions/settings may have errors, use completely at your own risk.
If something needs correcting or you have something to add - please let me know. Ray, AA4UK

Overall:

The radio has one single bank of 128 memories to hold both the 2M and 220 frequencies.

The two displays do not separate the 2M and 220 bands. Each display only has access to the same single bank of 128 memories - but the two displays may be in any "display" combination of frequency-channel, channel-number, or by a given channel name

It may be advantageous to keep 2 Meter frequencies grouped separately from 220 frequencies. I kept my 2M memories in 1 to 49 and 220s in 50+ , that way you can more easily keep "A" display on 2 Meter frequencies and "B" on 220 frequencies, or vice-versa.

The hard part is getting all your memory-channel information ready and organized in advance, knowing a few extraordinary menu items, and precisely setting the all menu selections before starting the programming process.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember, while operating in the channel-memory mode, some features of memorized memory-channels, such as power and PL tone, can not be changed.  You can't turn the PL tone on or change it, you can't change from low to high power - to make these changes you have to delete the memory and resave with the new settings you desire.  While in Freq mode (VFO mode) you can change all set setup features - but once they are memorized, you can not.  If you desired to have a simplex or a repeater channel with both high and low power - then a different channel could be saved with the other desired power level.

Before you start programming, it's easier if you have your repeaters grouped by similar menu settings, as demonstrated in the spreadsheet - that way the radio can be programmed more easily and with a small chance of errors.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Learn and examine all 30 menus to familiarize yourself with them.  If you’re new to ham radio, use the manual or do a computer search for setup items you haven’t learned about yet

The VFO mode on this radio is the "FREQ"
setting mode Menu 21.  Many menus can't be altered unless you are in the "Freq" mode.

Most menu items are self explanatory & straight forward - except for:

BCL  13  it’s not a busy scan channel lock out, what it does - if a channel is busy or has noise, then it inhibits transmit on that channel. Personally - I leave it turned off.  I guess if you had your volume off or very low then if might save some embarrassment and keep you from breaking in on top of somebody, It could also leave you out when you double, or keep someone from catching your voice.

PF1  20  is a definable function key ( small button just below the Push-To-Talk key ) you can choose scan, lamp, SOS, radio, or off (do nothing). There is scan button already, so lamp or radio ( local FM music ) are good choices. Personally - I chose FM Music.

FM Music:  You can set two banks of 9 FM music channels: Set the PF1 to "radio" and press the PF1 key.  A FM music frequency will appear.  Scan key to the frequency you want or turn the knob ( can’t direct enter ), to memorize this frequency press MENU & press 1 to 9. To save in the second bank ( Team 2 ) press MENU , # , # ( till Team 2 appears ) & press 1 to 9.  Press PF1 to return to the amateur frequencies. Listen to music: Press PF1 and 1 to 9, or # for Team 2 bank and 1 to 9.

ABR  22  is the auto backlight - lights display a couple of seconds when you do something.

SECOND  25  is a stopwatch feature, turn it on with the menu and the # -key symbol starts and stops the stopwatch.  The A/B or Exit with take it off the display.  It remains on till you turn it off via the menu.

Remember:  SCAN key  also acts as the Reverse Key, to see if you can hear the input to the repeater, and if you Transmit, it will Transmit on the output freq of the repeater.  Handy - if the repeater is down. Press again to cancel.

Note: Since this model of this radio doesn’t have Scan-Memory-Channel-Lock-Out, and if you memorize a overly-busy repeater, a noisy repeater, or a Weather Service memory - then you really can’t use the scan button, because the scan will stop when it reaches one of these busy channels.  So, if you enjoy scanning to keep up with your area, then you may not want to save any overly-busy frequencies that would constantly stop the scan.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOW TO SET A MENU ITEM:

To use the MENU button (for most menus):

Press Menu to "Start a Menu"

Dial, UP, Down, or enter a menu number 1 to 30

Press Menu to select that needed menu

Press Menu to activate and drop down to selections

Dial, UP or Down to make a specific selection

Press Menu to "Accept" what setting you have chosen

Wait a second or press Exit to go back to freq or memory mode.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.  Get your repeaters and simplex frequencies in order.   Sort into groups that have the same non-changeable setup items: 1-Step, 4-Power, 8-Wide, 13-BCL, 15-R-CTC, 16-T-CTC (PL Tone), 17-T-DCS, 18-T-DCS, 23-Offset, and 24-Shift-dir (as shown in my spreadsheet example for Memphis below).

At some point, (via your computer or writing one in) you need to assign a memory-channel number to go with each repeater.

Then last, these (same menu type) groups should be sorted by frequency order, so later all you will need to do is to raise the frequency and save that frequency to a memory-channel number.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2.
Set the menus for the first group that all have same menu settings:

NOTE:  These menus: 1, 4, 8, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 are permanent to memory-channels & can not be changed unless the memory is deleted, the menu is set correctly, and then the memory is saved again.

DO FIRST:  Menu 21:  set to FREQ  ( like VFO mode ), to allow many of the menu changes

Menu 1:  STEP to 5.0K (or what your band needs to enter frequencies)

Menu 2:  Squelch set to 3 ( changeable later up to 9 )

Menu 3:  Battery Saver = ON is ok

Menu 4:  TXP Transmit Power, to minimize RF exposure, as a rule you should only use the least amount of power needed to achieve communications.  If you are using your HT as a mobile rig with an external antenna - then high power may be appropriate, if you live close to a favorite repeater then low power may be appropriate.  Test your HT to see what repeaters you can key-up and communicate on.  You could also save (duplicate) some or all of your memories using the low power setting on a different range of channel numbers.

Menu 5:  "Roger" signal, I left mine OFF

Menu 6:  Transmit Time out Timer, I used 60 seconds, probably ok

Menu 7:  Voice Activated Transmit ( VOX ) leave OFF ( unless you need it )

Menu 8:  Wide deviation, set at WIDE - unless you know a specific repeater requires narrow

Menu 9:  Voice, leave OFF, I couldn't hear it anyway

Menu 10:  Time Out Alarm before (menu 6) shuts transmit down,  5 seconds  probably ok

Menu 11:  Beep, OFF unless you like to hear key button beeps

Menu 12:  Power on message,  BATT-V  to see your battery is ok

Menu 13:  Busy Channel Lock (can't transmit on top of somebody), I prefer OFF

Menu 14:  (15 sec.) Auto Lock keypad, I prefer OFF, ( hold in  #  to unlock)

Menu 15:  R-CTC to OFF (unless you want to only receive via tone control)

Menu 16:  Transmit PL tone, must be set correctly to access some repeaters
(107.2 most common for Memphis)

Menu 17:  R-DCS to OFF (unless you want to use digital coded squelch)

Menu 18:  T-DCS to OFF (unless you want to use digital coded squelch)

Menu 19:  SC-REV Scanning method, I've always liked CO carrier operated, it'll listen for a while & continue.  TO will stop for 5 seconds.  SE will stop scan at a squelch break and stay there.

Menu 20:  PF1 is a definable function key, see explanation notes above

Menu 21:  set to FREQ  ( like VFO mode ), to allow frequencies to be entered and to make many of the menu changes

Menu 22:  ABR is the short time auto backlight, ON is probably better

Menu 23:  Offset to .6 Mhz for 2M, 1.6 Mhz for 220, 5 Mhz for 440, zero for simplex

Menu 24:  Shift Direction set to "-" or "+" for repeaters, or Off for simplex

Menu 25:  Second is a stopwatch feature, ON is ok, details above

Menu 26:  Channel Name, can't be entered till a frequency is memorized

Menu 27:  Memorize-Channel, values in all menus (freq-VFO mode) will save to a memory channel you select, it is non-changeable unless you delete and resave

Menu 28:  Delete-Channel, erases a channel

Menu 29:  Reset VFO functions parameters or ALL transceiver settings, personally I did the "ALL" to get back to a new fresh radio status

Menu 30:  SCAN CD, searches for transmitted Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System sub audible PL tones, or for Digital Coded Squelch, see instruction manual for operation

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.  Remember to set / verify all the menus when you get to a new group (gray line) in the spreadsheet.

Also, if you wish: to clear-erase all previous programming and get a fresh start (like a new blank HT), use Menu 29 choose  Reset All?,  Press Menu = Yes

ONLY
Program only from A or B Display, don’t jump around.  Several menus can retain different settings on Display A than on Display B, & you could be memorizing the wrong data.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.
First for Practice  It may be a good idea to memorize about 3 channels (repeaters that you can actually hit), and test them. Try and change some setting, and just play with the HT to become familiar with it.

Once you’re doing ok, can operate, and feel ok with the HT - then delete these channels, or do a reset. Now you’ll be more comfortable to memorize all the repeaters you wish.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5.
Start Programming -  (a)  Set Menu 21 to "FREQ" mode (like VFO mode on other radios)

 (b) Verify the menus have your needed settings:
On my HT I used:  4 =
mostly High unless Low would work,  8 = Wide,  13 & 15 = off,  16 = correct PL tone
17 & 18 = off,  23 = correct offset24 = correct shift direction

(c) Set Menu 1 to 5.0k (or what step your band needs to enter frequencies)

(d) Set the frequency, you can dial the frequency, up-down arrows, or direct enter with the keypad

(e) Save to a memory number (using menu 27 select and menu-save the channel number)

(f) Repeat steps (d) & (e) for the next repeater . . . finish all in that group that have the same menu settings

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE - USE YOUR OWN CHOICES

In addition, be sure to set your power menu 4, and menu 8 = wide,

13, 15, 17, 18 = OFF, or set the way you need them to operate.
